Giao thức mạng được dùng để truyền dữ liệu qua Internet. Giao thức trước đó là IPv4 đã được sử dụng hơn 30 năm, và hệ địa chỉ 32-bit theo thời gian trở thành giới hạn — đơn giản là không đủ địa chỉ cho tất cả.
Giao thức mới IPv6 dùng hệ địa chỉ 128-bit, vì vậy số địa chỉ khả dụng tăng lên đáng kể. Điều này có nghĩa là nhiều người dùng hơn có thể nhận IP riêng, và tốc độ kết nối với IPv6 thường nhỉnh hơn một chút.
